Hiroshima is famously known for its many rivers, history, and awesome food, but did you know all about our mountains here?  Some of the most popular sightseeing and hiking spots that are even unknown to the locals are the mountain tops.

First off, right in the middle of the city is Hijimaya

This is a not so well-known but beautiful little mountain located right at the end of peace road.

Hijiyama host wonderful views of Hiroshima city and has multiple viewing platforms.

For locals, it is a popular spot to hang out and view the cherry blossoms in the spring. The mountain is home to over 1,300 cherry trees and is gorgeous year-round.

Other than the awesome hiking trails and views, the mountain is also home to Japan’s first public modern art museum. Although it is currently and temporarily closed due to construction the museum hosts some incredible exhibits and is well worth a visit.

There is a ton to see on the mountain and listing everything would take away from the adventure.

Mitaki

Mitaki is named for the three waterfalls within its grounds.

As you wander through the tranquil grounds, you’ll come across several other memorials for the atomic bomb victims, as well as innumerable stone jizo statues. Jizo is the protector of women, children, and travelers, and his statues are often seen wearing bright red caps

Many of these statues are covered in moss, which only adds to the temple’s enchanting aesthetic.

If you want to go all-in on the Japanese experience, there’s also a small, rustic-looking teahouse where you can enjoy simple traditional Japanese food and tea.

Mitaki is not usually crowded but can get busy during the autumn months when the leaves are changing color. It is beautiful year-round and is a gorgeous low-key hiking spot.

Ogonzan

Finally, we have Ogonzan mountain, The tallest of the three mountains offers a beautiful view of Hiroshima and has a 360-degree view of the city.

It is a trek to get to the top but is well worth the view, and for those with a car there is parking up top!
