Upon arrival in Japan, it won’t take long to notice that surgical masks are very common. Add the coronavirus to the mix and one could even start to feel shy being out in public without one.
Here is our breakdown of the reasons why they are commonplace in Japan and the social etiquette that comes with the mask.
The Why
Masks are commonplace in Japan for a few reasons.
Protection from disease: With the coronavirus madness going on masks are no longer only common in this part of the world, masks can be seen in countries around the globe.
Allergies: With approximately a quarter of the Japanese population suffering from hay fever, many turn to masks for relief from the symptoms caused by the pollen.
Warmth: The mask warms your face in the cold Japanese winter!
Fashion: There is a huge selection of available styles of masks to choose from. Also, there is a common belief that masks can help create the illusion of a slimmer face.
Etiquette
Especially now with the coronavirus, following proper mask etiquette is more important than ever. When venturing into a public space it is everyone’s responsibility to do their part to not only protect themselves but protect others.
Even before the corona outbreak, it is a cultural expectation to wear a mask when sick to avoid infecting others. As you can imagine, this cultural norm has been compounded by the coronavirus. If you are showing symptoms of illness without a mask be aware that this is a serious cultural taboo in this turbulent time.
